Homemade pizza is the best. I love it because you can control every aspect of your pie and get really creative with sauces and toppings. Some of the best pizzas I've had are not your typical marinara and mozzarella pizzas. Before I went vegan, I loved eating the Caesar Salad Pizza from Mellow Mushroom. It's the most delicious pizza with a white sauce base, chicken pieces and a caesar salad dumped on top. Sounds weird, but it's amazing.
Usually the thing that keeps me from making pizza at home is the dough. The thought of making my own pizza dough intimidates me. It sounds so involved and time consuming. But every time I make it I'm reminded of how easy it is. It's also something you can double and freeze the second half for later. I recently found an amazingly easy and delicious Whole Wheat Pizza Dough recipe from 100 Days of Real Food. Lisa's recipe is the one I use to make this Basil Hummus Pizza and I highly recommend it! (After the recipe card you can see pictures of the process I took to make the pizza dough.)
Vegans love pizza too. We just have to be a little more creative sometimes. Especially if we don't care to use dairy-free processed cheese, we have to make sure there's some type of "cheese" substitute. A little while back I made some Vegan Parmesan Cheese from nutritional yeast and almonds. I figured if my pizza's base and toppings were flavorful I would be able to get by with just a slight dusting of parmesan to complete my pizza. And it worked. This pizza is great hot or cold and you could really use any kind of hummus you have on hand. But, you really should try out this Oil-Free Basil Hummus.
Here's some pictures showing the process I took to make the pizza dough. It didn't take long at all and it yielded enough dough for two pizzas. Brett and I like our pizza thin and crispy, so from one dough we can usually get 4 meals (2 for each of us)!

One of my favorite ways to make something vegan without using cheese is refried beans! I have this Southwestern Chicken Pizza I love, but you could do it without chicken. Use refried beans on top of the dough instead of sauce and cheese, and then add whatever toppings you want, like tomatoes, corn, salsa, more beans, avocado, etc.

Ah that sounds awesome! I have a can of refried beans that's just been sitting in my cupboard. Thanks for the inspiration!
