I've become a big believer in homemade hamburger buns.

Especially once I discovered how quick and easy vegan hamburger buns can be to make...right in the comfort of my own kitchen.

If you have store-bought vegan burgers on hand in your freezer, whip up this 40 minute vegan burger bun recipe and you'll have a delicious, gourmet meal on the table before you know it.

We love to enjoy these vegan hamburger buns with my Easy BBQ Veggie Burgers or any kind of store-bought burger I have on hand.

Making fresh bread really does make all the difference when it comes to jazzing up simple freezer meals, and this recipe takes 40 minutes from start to finish!

Talk about a quick and easy burger bun recipe!

Let me walk you through how to make these light and fluffy vegan burger buns!

Ingredients You'll Need for Homemade Vegan Hamburger Buns

To make these vegan burger buns, you'll only need the following 7 ingredients:

    • Active dry yeast
    • Warm water
    • Vegetable oil
    • Cane sugar
    • Aquafaba
    • Salt
    • All-purpose flour

    That's all you need!

How to Replace Eggs in Homemade Hamburger Buns

If you're not familiar with aquafaba, you may be surprised that you probably have it on hand already!

Aquafaba is simply the liquid from a can of chickpeas.

In this recipe, aquafaba acts as a great egg replacement.

I actually use aquafaba quite often when baking. It works great in so many vegan recipes including muffins, homemade bread, meringues, etc.

To use aquafaba instead of an egg, simply use 3 tablespoons of aquafaba for every egg the recipe calls for. You probably only want to use aquafaba to replace a maximum of 2 eggs.

What Makes a Good Hamburger Bun?

I don't know about you, but I've attempted to make homemade vegan burger buns before and they did not turn out well.

So, what was wrong with them?

They were too dense and hard.

When it comes to finding good burger buns, you want a bun that holds it shape, but is still light and fluffy so that you can easily bite through it and taste all the flavors of the burger and toppings.

If all you taste is bread when you are eating your burger, it's probably not the best burger bun!

    Homemade Vegan Hamburger Buns Tips

Here are some tips that you can keep in mind when making this homemade vegan burger bun recipe.

Proof the Yeast: It's important that you allow the yeast to sit in the warm water for a few minutes to allow it to proof and/or bloom. This lets us know that the yeast is alive and will result in a light and fluffy burger bun!

Use Warm, Not Hot Water: When proofing the yeast, make sure that your water isn't too hot. Otherwise you may kill the yeast! To know that the water is a good temperature without using a thermometer, simply stick your finger into the water. If it feels warm, but you can keep your finger inside without it burning, that's the perfect temperature. If it's too hot to hold your finger in the water, then your water is too hot.

Freeze/Refrigerate the Yeast: If you're yeast doesn't bloom, that means it's probably dead or old. To keep yeast fresh, store it in the fridge or freezer!

Use White Flour: I know whole wheat flour is more nutritious, but for a super light and fluffy bun, all-purpose flour is the best choice. If you want to make some buns with whole wheat flour, start by swapping half of the all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour and adjust the water as needed.

Switch up the Size: I love that this recipe can make 8, 12 or 24 buns, depending on the size of your burgers and/or sandwich. If you plan to enjoy larger burgers, divide the dough into 8 or 12 sections. For smaller burgers, such as sliders, divide the dough into 24 sections and bake until golden brown.

Add toppings: To customize your burger buns, you can brush the tops of the buns with melted vegan butter and add sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top. Get creative and experiment with different toppings!

    • Pour the dough out onto a flour surface and knead it for a few minutes. Then immediately divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
    • Place the balls of dough onto your baking sheet, leaving 2-3 inches in between each bun.
    • Cover the buns and allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes until risen.

How to Store Leftover Hamburger Buns

If you have any leftover buns, you can store them in an airtight bag or container at room temperature for a day.

To make them last longer, you can also store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.

To revive leftover buns, we love to slice them and toast them in the oven or toaster until warm and toasted.

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
    • 1 cup + 1 tablespoon warm water
    • ¼ cup cane sugar
    • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
    • 3 tablespoons aquafaba
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 3-3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

    Instructions

    • Start by preheating your oven to 425 °F and line 1-2 baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. If you're making 8 larger buns, you'll only need 1 baking sheet. For more, smaller buns, prepare two baking sheets
    • In a large mixing bowl, stir the yeast into the warm water. Add the oil and sugar and stir again. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
    • Next add the aquafaba, salt and 3 cups of flour and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is still too wet and sticky, continue adding dough until a soft, kneadable dough forms.
    • Pour the dough out onto a flour surface and knead it for a few minutes. Then immediately divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
    • Place the balls of dough onto your lined baking sheets, leaving 2-3 inches in between each bun.
    • Cover the buns and allow the dough to rest for 10 minutes until risen.
    • Bake the buns for 8-15 minutes, depending on how many you're making, until they are baked through and golden brown on top.
    • Transfer the buns to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before slicing in half and filling them with your favorite burgers and toppings!

    Notes

Aquafaba is the liquid from a can of chickpeas. Simply open a can of chickpeas and measure out 3 tablespoons of the liquid straight from the can.
