You'd think that hearing someone say, "Oh man, that's so good!" while eating food would be a good thing, right?
Well, now that I live in China, that sentence has become a red flag to warn me about...
MSG!
Dun, dun, duuuuuuun...
I didn't think much about or worry about MSG living in the states, except for when I went to certain Asian restaurants, but now that I live in China, I'm practically swimming in those long, clear, salt-like seasonings. I actually don't know much about MSG, but I do know that it's not the best for me...or you. I also know that it makes me want to keep eating and eating and eating, even when my stomach is full.
The other day Brett and I were eating at a restaurant with some friends and I quickly became obsessed with a spicy seasoning. Each bite I took, I would first dip my dumpling into that red, flaky goodness and man, my dumplings tasted goooooood. After indulging in 3 or 4 large, doughy dumplings, I decided to look closer at the seasoning and sure enough, tons of MSG crystals were swimming in the red chili flakes.
Mmmm. Gotta love it.
One of the first sentences I learned to say when I moved to China was, "I don't eat meat." Now, I've also added, "Don't add MSG" to my repertoire. Thankfully I don't eat out very much so I'm not too worried about what all the MSG will do to my body, but I have learned to look before I eat and to ask the restaurant to not add MSG when I can.
Oh Lawd, protect this body!
Thankfully, food can taste ah-mazing even without MSG. I mean, common, just look at these Brownie Batter Vegan Protein Overnight Oats. Oh yum!!
If you didn't know it by now, chocolate is a staple in my diet. Not just any chocolate though. I stay clear of milk chocolate and other forms of chocolate that are laden with white sugar and other processed junk (when I can at least). My chocolate creations are usually sweetened with fruit or pure maple syrup, like these oats! These Brownie Batter Vegan Protein Overnight Oats are sweetened with pure maple syrup and they also contain blended raw zucchini for extra creaminess and nutrition.
Uh, yes please!
I hope you can give these Brownie Batter Vegan Protein Overnight Oats a try! They're delicious, filling and full of plant-based protein. If you give them a try, let me know by leaving a comment below or taking a picture and tagging #theconscientiouseater on Instagram!

Whoaaaa zucchini!! Game changer! Can't decide if I want this for breakfast or dessert - maybe both 😉
Faith says
It really is! It makes things so thick and creamy! And I've been eating it for breakfast and dessert, so no need to choose just one meal:)

This looks amazing!!! I made these all the time except I have NEVER added zucchini (and use more protein powder) to them but I'm definitely going to have to pick up some (second time today I am regretting not getting the zucchini I was eyeing up yesterday but didn't because things are crazy and didn't think we would get a chance to eat it until the weekend) and try it the next time I make them!!
Thank you for linking up with us for Meatless Monday!

Yeah, it's probably not a big deal in the long run, but I definitely don't feel great the next morning after eating out haha!
