What day is the 4th of July on this year?
July 4th falls on a Monday in 2022.
When was the first 4th of July (Independence Day) celebrated?
You might think that the first 4th of July was celebrated in 1776, the year that America gained its independence from the British.
But it was actually first celebrated in 1777!
According to PBS, "On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks."
